Born in Guadeloupe in 1961, Jocelyn Akwaba Matignon has spent more than three decades developing a body of work across territories, cultures and systems of knowledge. Trained in France, where he received the DNSEP, he now lives and works between Guadeloupe and Guatemala.

Painting lies at the heart of a practice that also extends into printmaking, sculpture, installation and performance. His encounter with Maya thought and cosmology profoundly shaped his research. Through layers of matter, signs and figures, forms emerge, disappear and transform, exploring memory and realities beyond appearances.

A former resident of the Cité internationale des arts in Paris, Akwaba Matignon collaborated with Brandywine Workshop and Archives in Philadelphia in 2025. His work has been presented at Fondation Clément, Mémorial ACTe, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Museo Popol Vuh.
